Basic Books Group releases collection on U.S. Constitution

The Basic Books Group has released a collection of seven books examining the history, meaning, and power of the United States Constitution. These works explore various aspects of constitutional law, including free speech and enduring legal questions.

One featured title, ‘Born Equal’ by constitutional historian Akhil Reed Amar, traces the evolution of birth equality in America from 1840 to 1920. The book analyzes the constitutional debates surrounding the abolition of slavery, the securing of Black and female citizenship, and the expansion of suffrage through four key amendments. Amar’s work examines how figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton influenced the nation’s legal and political landscape during this transformative era.
