Basiliano car crash investigation: 11-year-old girl killed

Authorities are investigating a fatal car accident in Basiliano that resulted in the death of 11-year-old Noemi Schiavo and left her 4-year-old sister in critical condition. The incident occurred on the Pontebbana highway when the vehicle struck a plane tree.

The father of the children, a 45-year-old man, has been discharged from the hospital and is under investigation for road homicide and causing very serious personal injury. While toxicology tests returned negative, investigators have seized his mobile phone to determine if driver distraction played a role. Other hypotheses being examined include a sudden medical emergency or falling asleep at the wheel.

The mother of the children has publicly clarified that both girls were properly secured in their appropriate car seats and were sleeping at the time of the crash. She stated that the father had suffered a medical episode, which led to the accident. The 4-year-old victim remains in a coma at the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Udine, where her condition is described as stable but extremely critical.
