Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrates 50th anniversary
The Catholic Church has commenced the Guadalupan Jubilee Year, marking the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the New Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The milestone commemorates the 1976 inauguration of the modern architectural landmark designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, which features a distinctive copper-clad circular structure.
Pope Leo XIV issued a message to the Mexican people, expressing closeness and encouraging the faithful to live the commemoration with gratitude and hope. The Pope emphasized the importance of evangelization and providing charitable aid to those in need. In Mexico, Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera delivered a homily during preparatory celebrations, addressing the current social climate of uncertainty.
The Jubilee also has international reach; the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has joined the worldwide celebrations. Archbishop José H. Gomez announced a 2027 pilgrimage to Mexico City to honor the Virgin Mary. Additionally, there is speculation regarding potential papal visits to Mexico in 2027 and 2031 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
