Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi undergoes AI-assisted restoration
Art historians, software engineers, and Franciscan Friars are utilizing artificial intelligence and digital technology to assist in the restoration of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi in Umbria, Italy.
The basilica, which serves as the resting place for Saint Francis of Assisi, suffered significant devastation during a pair of powerful earthquakes in 1997. The seismic events caused a section of the roof to collapse and resulted in the permanent damage of numerous art treasures. The new restoration efforts aim to address the damage left by the quakes through advanced digital methods.
