Basilicata achieves significant pharmaceutical cost containment

The Basilicata region has demonstrated effective management of pharmaceutical spending, according to recent national monitoring data from AIFA. The region ranks as the second-best in Italy for cost containment, following only Emilia-Romagna.

In 2025, Basilicata recorded a 3.1% contraction in Class A-SSN pharmaceutical consumption, contrasting with a national average increase of 0.7%. Additionally, the region's overall pharmaceutical spending growth was limited to 3.8%, significantly lower than the national increase of 5.0%.

Health Councilor Cosimo Latronico attributed these results to strategies focused on prescription appropriateness and increased use of generic and biosimilar drugs. The share of regional spending covered by generic drugs rose from 21.9% to 23.9%, contributing to sustainability without compromising therapeutic efficacy.
