Basilicata Region acquires Lago Pantano WWF Oasis; UNICEF reports Nepal flood impact

The Basilicata Region has finalized the acquisition of the ‘WWF Oasis’ located within the Lago Pantano di Pignola Regional Reserve. The purchase, valued at 298,545 euros, was completed via a notarized deed on September 22. This move follows a decision made by the regional government in July to exercise the right of preemption to purchase the property from the Consorzio Asi.

Regional Councilor for the Environment, Laura Mongiello, stated that the acquisition ensures the area becomes permanent public heritage for the Lucanian community. The project is part of a strategic initiative for the conservation and enhancement of aquatic and riparian environments.

Separately, UNICEF reports a humanitarian crisis in Nepal following devastating floods in the central and northern regions. Approximately 14,000 children have been unable to attend school across 62 educational centers in the Dhading, Nuwakot, and Rasuwa districts. The floods resulted in the deaths or disappearance of roughly 440 students and school staff, including 414 children.
