Basilicata approves new law for riverbed maintenance and safety

The Basilicata Regional Council has approved bill n. 135/2026, which modifies regional law n. 12 of 1979 regarding the cultivation of quarries and peatlands and the extraction of aggregates from riverbeds.

The new regulations aim to streamline procedures for extracting fluvial material and arranging riverbeds. This includes allowing interventions to be activated following reports of critical issues from municipalities or industry players. The law also introduces the possibility of granting concessions to extraction companies for the ordinary maintenance of riverbeds, subject to technical verifications and current regulations.

Regional Councilor Nicola Massimo Morea stated that the goal is to create a balance between territorial safety, environmental protection, and productive needs. The legislation allows for the compensation of authorized intervention costs through the value of the extracted, reusable material, while maintaining regional control and environmental standards.
