Basilicata artisan businesses see growth despite rising energy costs
The artisan sector in Basilicata, Italy, recorded a positive net growth of 22 businesses during the first half of 2026. As of June 30, the region had 9,411 active artisan enterprises, following 92 new registrations and 70 closures.
Despite this statistical resilience, Confartigianato Basilicata has raised alarms regarding economic pressures. The organization highlighted that electricity prices in the region are 23% higher than the European Union average, threatening competitiveness. Additionally, there are calls for faster processing of regional grants. Currently, 537 applications are under review for a €9.2 million regional incentive fund, which offers non-repayable grants of up to €200,000 to help businesses modernize machinery and reduce energy consumption.
Territorially, the province of Matera saw a net increase of 16 businesses, while Potenza saw an increase of 6. The sector is primarily composed of services (4,076 businesses), followed by construction (3,081) and industry (1,994).
