Italy faces rising cost of living and food price surges

Italy is experiencing significant economic pressures characterized by a rising cost of living and sharp increases in food prices. According to data from ISMEA, greenhouse cucumber prices have doubled compared to the previous year, reaching 1.10 euros per kilogram, while field-grown cucumbers rose by over 27 percent.

Consumer advocacy group Codici has raised concerns regarding the lack of transparency in the commercial supply chain, questioning whether large-scale retail distributors are accumulating excessive margins at the expense of consumers. This trend is echoed by reports showing that food prices in Italy have grown by nearly 30 percent over the last five years, forcing many families to reduce the quantity or quality of their purchases.

In the Basilicata region, labor unions have warned that living with dignity is becoming a privilege due to high utility bills, fuel costs, and grocery prices. Meanwhile, reports highlight a growing disparity between the high retail prices paid by consumers and the low revenues received by farmers, noting significant markups on products like zucchini, grapes, and packaged salads.
