Basilicata data center outage disrupts healthcare services
A week after a major data center outage in the Basilicata region of Italy, essential digital services have not yet returned to full functionality. The disruption has severely impacted the CUP (Single Booking Center) system, which is critical for citizens to access healthcare services, including outpatient appointments and laboratory exams.
Regional Councilor Piero Marrese has called for transparency regarding the cause of the failure and the security of stored data. He highlighted that significant investments, including 14 million euros for the Potenza Data Center and additional resources for a disaster recovery system in Matera, were intended to ensure infrastructure stability. While healthcare workers have maintained services using paper-based methods, the prolonged instability has caused significant delays and administrative difficulties.
The outage, which began around September 27, reportedly caused a second system crash shortly after the initial failure, leading to the postponement of a regional council meeting. While official communications suggested the incident might be a technical malfunction rather than a cyberattack, the exact nature of the problem remains unclear.
