Basilicata diversifies economy through tropical fruit and truffle projects

The Italian region of Basilicata is undergoing significant agricultural and economic shifts. The Tenute Zuccarella Producers' Organization is beginning the harvest of high-quality mangoes, a tropical fruit cultivated through high-tech investment in the region. Currently producing 70–80 tons annually, the project aims to expand acreage as trees reach maturity, focusing on zero-residue certification to compete in European markets.

Simultaneously, the regional government has launched an ambitious plan to create Europe’s largest truffle farm. By planting thousands of symbiotic trees across vast forested areas, the initiative seeks to leverage the local microclimate to produce high-quality white and black truffles. This project, funded largely through the Rural Development Program (PSR) and European Union resources, aims to boost agritourism and combat rural depopulation.

These developments occur as the region navigates an ecological transition from its traditional oil extraction past toward renewable energy, including wind and solar power. However, the shift faces challenges such as bureaucracy and the need for improved infrastructure to ensure long-term economic stability for local communities.
