Basilicata launches free ovarian reserve screening for women

The Basilicata Region and the San Carlo Hospital in Potenza have launched a pioneering campaign titled “Screening riserva ovarica – Il futuro è oggi” (Ovarian Reserve Screening – The Future is Today). The initiative provides free anti-Müllerian hormone blood tests for women aged 25 to 35 to assess their reproductive future and ovarian reserve.

This program aims to provide scientific awareness regarding the biological clock, which naturally declines with age. While the screening offers knowledge, discussions continue regarding the need for economic support for egg freezing (social freezing) to assist women who may face infertility due to delayed motherhood.

Broader demographic trends in Italy show a decline in birth rates and an increasing average age of motherhood, which reached 32.6 years in 2024. Factors contributing to delayed childbearing include economic instability, high living costs, and career pursuits, leading to a growing reliance on medical technologies to manage fertility.
