Basilicata officials plan safety upgrades for Viggiano industrial area
Authorities and labor unions in Basilicata are addressing urgent safety concerns within the Viggiano-Grumento Nova industrial area following recent road accidents, including a fatal incident. The issues cited include poor road conditions, inadequate lighting, insufficient signage, and dangerous intersections.
Regional Economic Development Councilor Francesco Cupparo met with local mayors, union representatives from Uilm, Fiom, and Fim, and officials from Eni and Apibas to define an intervention program. The Mayor of Grumento Nova identified ten critical road points, some classified as highly dangerous. To address these, Apibas has prepared an initial work program worth approximately 300,000 euros, with a second phase of 700,000 euros currently being finalized, totaling a one-million-euro investment in road safety.
Political leaders, including Piero Lacorazza of the PD, are calling for a broader assessment of all industrial areas in Basilicata, such as San Nicola di Melfi, to ensure safety is treated as a structural policy rather than a recurring emergency.
