Basilicata opposition criticizes Meloni over oil extraction

Opposition councilors in Basilicata have criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her recent comments regarding oil extraction in the region. In a joint note, minority representatives described her tone as “unacceptable” and suggested her rhetoric implies a potential green light to increase hydrocarbon extraction as current concessions approach their 2029 expiration.

The opposition expressed concern over recent decisions by the regional government to approve two hydrocarbon research permits without a vote from the Regional Council and despite opposition from local mayors. They argued that such a delicate issue should be handled with rigor and public participation, seeking a balance between health, labor, and ecological transition, rather than being used for “political propaganda.”

Furthermore, the councilors highlighted the regional challenges facing Basilicata, noting its infrastructural isolation and the highest emigration rate in Italy relative to its population. They called for a transparent discussion that addresses both industrial needs and social-climatic justice.
