Basilicata opposition criticizes regional budget use of environmental funds

Opposition members of the Basilicata Regional Council have criticized the 2026-2028 budget adjustment, accusing the center-right majority of mismanaging environmental compensation funds from extractive activities.

Critics argue that instead of financing development, new employment, or services for citizens with disabilities and students, these funds are being used to cover current budget deficits and maintain existing measures like the 'Bonus Gas'. Specifically, approximately 28.7 million euros from environmental compensations—originally intended for photovoltaic projects for the Acquedotto Lucano—have been redirected.

Furthermore, opposition leaders expressed concern over a new accounting procedure where nearly 29 million euros are recorded in the 2026 budget, despite oil companies stating these funds will only be paid after December 31, 2026, following verification of project results.
