Basilicata proposes sign language operators for emergency services

Marika Padula, the regional guarantor for the rights of persons with disabilities in Basilicata, has proposed improving emergency medical accessibility for deaf individuals. The proposal calls for at least one operator trained in Italian Sign Language (LIS) to be present during every shift of the 118 emergency service and in emergency rooms.

The initiative aims to ensure that deaf patients can communicate immediately with first responders to report symptoms, allergies, or ongoing therapies, and to understand medical instructions during critical situations. Padula intends to formally engage with the Azienda Ospedaliera Regionale San Carlo di Potenza regarding emergency room services and the ASP regarding the 118 service to establish concrete implementation timelines.
