Basilicata officials confirm oil extraction limits and report shifting demographic trends

Basilicata is facing complex socio-economic shifts involving energy production, demographic trends, and infrastructure challenges. Italian Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Regional President Vito Bardi issued a joint statement confirming that oil extraction limits for Val d’Agri and Tempa Rossa will remain unchanged, adhering to existing protocols despite national efforts to enhance energy independence.

Demographically, the region is seeing a notable trend in circular mobility. Data from the Fondazione Studi Consulenti del Lavoro indicates that for every 100 young people who leave Basilicata, approximately 33.7 return. This represents a 54.5% increase in returnees compared to the previous five-year period, with Matera showing particularly high growth.

However, economic concerns persist. Critics have highlighted the regional government's decision to invest 9 million euros in heliports amid industrial decline and manufacturing struggles. Additionally, reports indicate that over 64% of school construction projects funded by the PNRR in the region remain unfinished, raising questions about long-term public investment and regional development.
