Basilika Gymnasium closed following plaster collapse and student injury
The Basilika Gymnasium in Thessaloniki has been closed until Friday, October 16, following an incident where a section of plaster fell from a classroom ceiling on Friday, October 9. The incident resulted in a 14-year-old student sustaining minor injuries. The student has since been treated and has returned home.
Following the incident, the Municipality of Thermi dispatched a technical team, including deputy mayors Apollos Tsolakis and Stelios Apostolou along with engineers, to conduct inspections. While the initial inspection found no visible signs of structural decay, cracks, or moisture in the affected art classroom or adjacent rooms, the exact cause of the detachment remains unknown. Localized traces of moisture were noted in some areas outside the classrooms.
Due to the undetermined cause of the collapse, the school will remain closed to ensure safety, and classes will be conducted via distance learning during this period. The municipality is continuing its investigation to ensure the safe reopening of the facility.
