Colorado Party factions navigate internal shifts for 2028

Internal dynamics within Paraguay’s Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR) are intensifying as various factions prepare for upcoming elections. Dissident leaders within the Colorado Party, including Mario Abdo Benítez and Hugo Velázquez, are working toward a unified list for the 2028 presidential race. This coalition aims to consolidate candidates like Arnoldo Wiens and Luis Pettengill to challenge the Honor Colorado faction.

In discussions regarding the 2028 candidacy, Congress President Basilio Núñez stated that Vice President Pedro Alliana should have sufficient time to select a running mate, rejecting the use of surveys or lotteries to define the duo. Meanwhile, Deputy Hugo Meza expressed optimism that the party could expand its municipal presence to nearly 200 municipalities, emphasizing the importance of these local results for national positioning.

In Luque, local political tensions have surfaced following allegations of potential electoral fraud. Candidates have accused political teams linked to Senator Derlis Maidana and Deputy Rodrigo Gamarra of attempting to influence election results by placing specific individuals as polling station members under the guise of the Cruzada Nacional movement.
