Zenaida Delgado faces investigation over alleged irregular payments
Paraguayan prosecutor Marlene Concepción González De Ovelar has been assigned to investigate criminal complaints against Senator Zenaida Delgado. The case, filed by Senate President Basilio Núñez, involves allegations of irregular financial movements and potential extortion of officials.
Delgado’s sister, Fátima Delgado, has publicly defended the legislator, claiming that the disputed bank transfers were merely personal loans between the senator and various officials. Fátima Delgado also alleged that Zenaida is facing threats from drug trafficking groups and accused her former partner, Gustavo Vera, of involvement in instances of violence against the senator.
In the legislature, Senator Dionisio Amarilla stated he may support the loss of Delgado’s parliamentary immunity if evidence of irregular payments is confirmed. The investigation by the Specialized Unit for Economic Crimes and Anticorruption proceeds alongside political proceedings within the National Congress regarding the senator's continued tenure.
