Basko, a young German shepherd, begins RCMP police dog training in Nanaimo
A young German shepherd named Basko has begun training in Nanaimo to become an RCMP police-service dog. Born four months ago at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, Alberta, Basko comes from a notable police-dog lineage.
His father, Neon, currently serves in Nanaimo with RCMP Constable Jordan Braid. His grandfather, Jago, was a decorated police dog who was killed in the line of duty in 2021 during a manhunt near High Prairie, Alberta.
Basko will be raised and trained by a specialized imprinter, a police officer trained to develop puppies into service dogs. Over the next one to two years, he will undergo regular evaluations and exposure to various environments and experiences to prepare for operational work.
