BASL President rejects bribery allegations and addresses judicial retirement debate

Rajeev Amarasuriya, President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), has rejected bribery allegations filed with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), labeling them as part of a “baseless personal attack” and a malicious campaign.

Amarasuriya clarified that the complaint stems from his professional role representing a motor vehicle manufacturer in court proceedings. He noted that the allegations are intended for “collateral purposes” and reminded that making false claims to CIABOC is an offense under the Anti-Corruption Act.

Separately, the BASL has addressed concerns regarding legal commentary on the proposed extension of the retirement age for judges. While the association maintains its opposition to the amendment on the grounds of judicial independence and constitutional integrity, it has cautioned against personal attacks on members of the judiciary. The BASL noted that the timing of the proposal has fueled public speculation regarding the incumbent Chief Justice, whose retirement is scheduled for December 2026.
