Basílica Santuário de Nazaré completes 33-month restoration

The Basílica Santuário de Nazaré in Belém has completed a comprehensive restoration project following 33 months of work. This marks the first full restoration of the monument since its inauguration in 1909.

The project utilized an innovative ‘open doors’ methodology, allowing religious services and visitor access to continue throughout most of the construction period. The temple only closed for a single week in September 2025.

Key interventions included the recovery of artistic and architectural elements such as altars, side chapels, century-old stained glass, decorative paintings, frescoes, and stone structures. The restoration also addressed structural issues through roof and ceiling reinforcement and waterproofing. Additionally, the bronze doors and facade were restored, the crypt was requalified for public access, and a new electrical substation was implemented to modernize the temple's infrastructure.
