Basque agricultural groups demand urgent water supply solutions

Agricultural and livestock organizations in the Basque Country, specifically Enba and UAGA, are calling on authorities to implement short- and medium-term water supply solutions. The groups aim to secure water for rural housing and the restoration of springs and sources depleted by drought.

Iñigo Bilbao, spokesperson for Enba, noted that the water shortage is preventing many rural farms from securing livestock feed for the winter. This has led to requests for coordinated forage purchases. The drought, which intensified in May, has forced farmers to deplete spring reserves. Additionally, high temperatures have caused milk production to drop by five to seven liters per cow per day.

The Basque Government and local provincial councils are currently coordinating with cooperatives to facilitate supply access. UAGA president Edurne Basterra expressed concern regarding water availability for extensive livestock farming, noting that animals are beginning to leave mountain pastures due to a lack of resources. The drought has also negatively impacted the reproduction rates of sheep and cattle.
