Spain education systems face PISA declines and regional challenges

Spain's regional education systems are facing diverse challenges as the 2026-2027 academic year begins. Recent PISA report results have sparked significant debate, showing declines in science, mathematics, and reading comprehension in regions like the Basque Country and Valencia. Officials and unions are calling for increased resources and structural reforms to address these deficiencies.

In Catalonia, vocational training (FP) is seeing record growth, with enrollment reaching approximately 176,000 students, supported by increased investment and new specialized programs. Conversely, the region also faces administrative scrutiny regarding the handling of PISA data and teacher shortages.

In the Canary Islands, extreme heat and suspended dust have forced several municipalities, including San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán, to transition to online learning to protect students. Additionally, teacher unions in the archipelago have raised concerns regarding deficient planning in teacher appointments, leading to unfilled vacancies and logistical issues for staff and schools.
