Basque goddess Mari featured on Times Square digital screens

Basque mythological figure Mari was featured on the giant digital screens of Times Square in New York City through a new work by artist Patxi Xabier Lezama. For a 24-hour period, the image of Mari appeared for 15 seconds every hour on a screen located at 1560 Broadway, between 46th and 47th Streets.

Lezama utilized the massive digital advertising landscape of Manhattan to present his work to an international audience outside of a traditional museum or gallery setting. The project creates a contrast between the technological and consumerist environment of Times Square and the mythological figure, who represents nature and the forces of the earth.

In Lezama’s interpretation, Mari is not merely a historical figure but is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, emphasizing themes related to nature and the environment.
