Basque Government expands energy storage and grid investment

The Basque Government is advancing energy infrastructure projects to meet 2030 energy goals and rising industrial demand. Currently, 21 battery energy storage system (BESS) projects are in the administrative process in Euskadi. Six of these have already received authorization, while the remaining 15 are in initial stages. Once completed, these projects are expected to reach a total storage capacity of 1,403.326 MWh with a total charge/discharge power of 352.61 MW. These projects are distributed equally between Álava and Bizkaia.

To support industrial electrification and decarbonization, investments in the Basque electrical distribution grid will increase significantly. The Basque Government has approved raising planned investments to over 153 million euros by 2027. This funding, provided by Iberdrola’s distributor i-DE, aims to modernize, digitize, and reinforce the grid to handle expected increases in industrial electricity demand. This represents a doubling of the annual investments planned for the distribution network over the last two years.
