Basque Government honors former leaders Leizaola and Agirre

The Basque Government held commemorative events to honor the legacy of former leaders Jesús María de Leizaola and José Antonio Agirre.

In Donostia, a ceremony marked the 130th anniversary of Jesús María de Leizaola's birth. Leizaola, who led the Basque Government in exile from 1960 to 1979 following the death of Agirre, was praised by Imanol Pradales for his commitment to democracy, peace, and human rights. The event was part of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the Basque Government.

In Donibane Lohizun, the Basque Diaspora Day featured a tribute to José Antonio Agirre. Using artificial intelligence, the event included a simulated dialogue with Agirre, who expressed support for the survival of Basque language and culture. Pradales emphasized the importance of the global Basque community in building a 'Global Basque Country' and noted the need for alliances to counter rising authoritarianism and populism.
