Basque Government launches Basque Zirkular Metals project
The Basque Government has introduced Basque Zirkular Metals, a transformative project under the Euskadi 2030 Industry Plan. The initiative aims to position the Basque Country as a European leader in the circular transformation of steel and metals while enhancing strategic autonomy and decarbonization.
The project expects to mobilize approximately 25 million euros and involves 11 industrial leaders, including ArcelorMittal Sestao, Sidenor, Grupo Tubacex, Gescrap, CAF, Gestamp, Gamesa Gearbox, Haizea Wind Group, Viuda de Sainz, Etxetar, and FMD Carbide. It also integrates five industrial clusters and members of the Basque Science, Technology, and Innovation Network.
Focusing on six key sectors—steelmaking, automotive, sustainable mobility, wind energy, advanced manufacturing, and construction—the project addresses the significant economic footprint of metals in the region. Metals represent 49% of the industrial gross value added and support over 110,000 jobs in Euskadi. Additionally, the annual consumption of 10 million tons of metal accounts for 63% of the carbon footprint of materials used by the Basque industry.
