Basque Parliament approves RGI income guarantee controls
The Basque Parliament has approved an amendment to regulate the Income Guarantee (RGI) system, emphasizing rigorous controls alongside proportionality and guarantees for recipients. The measure was passed with 39 votes from PNV and PSE-EE against 36 votes from the opposition.
The decision follows a period where Lanbide reported a 3.5-fold increase in the termination of RGI benefits, reaching 13,029 canceled aids. While the amendment maintains the inspection regime, it introduces nuances regarding recipient protections.
A separate proposal by EH Bildu and Sumar, which sought to remove the housing requirement for RGI access, was rejected. That proposal argued that current laws penalize individuals who lack valid legal titles to their housing. Consequently, the housing clause remains in effect within the existing legal framework.
