Basque Women Filmmakers essay released in English

The essay ‘Cineastas vascas / Euskal Emakume Zinemagileak’, which documents key women in Basque cinematography, has been translated into English as ‘Basque Women Filmmakers’. Originally published in 2023 by the Filmoteca Vasca in Spanish and Basque, the new English edition includes updated content and was presented during the Zinemaldia festival.

The publication, released by Peter Lang and translated by David Coury, offers an academic and informative exploration of films directed by Basque women across various genres. It examines topics such as gender representation, aesthetic diversity, the work of documentary filmmakers, and the impact of the Kimuak short film promotion program. The book also highlights the efforts of various associations and festivals to increase the visibility of female filmmakers and features dedicated chapters on figures such as Ana Díez, Helena Taberna, and Yannick Bellon.

The translation and publication were funded by the Basque Government through grants awarded to the University of Deusto’s Communication research group. Joxean Fernández, director of the Filmoteca Vasca, noted that this marks the first book from the entity to be published in English.
