Bassum Summer Wine Festival Struggles with Heat in Germany
The Bassumer Summer Wine festival in the Lower Saxony town of Bassum was heavily affected by unusually high temperatures. Organiser Jürgen Donner installed a hose from a hydrant, provided cooling towels and water, and set up a first‑aid station with instructions on treating heat‑related illness. Despite these measures, many visitors stayed away and sales were lower than expected.
Strong wind gusts during the night also damaged one of the festival’s pagoda‑style tents, adding to the challenges. Donner noted that the weather has repeatedly disrupted outdoor events in the region, but praised the good spirits of regular attendees who still enjoyed the limited program.
