Bat genomes reveal link between immunity and longevity
An international research team has published a study in the journal Nature revealing a fundamental link between the immune systems of bats and their exceptional longevity and cancer resistance. By analyzing the genomes and cell lines of eight species within the Myotis genus, scientists discovered that genes adapted to combat viruses also play critical roles in DNA repair and resisting age-related diseases.
The research indicates that bats have undergone significant evolutionary selection for proteins that interact with DNA viruses, such as hepatitis B and herpes viruses. This differs from humans, who show more selection for proteins reacting to RNA viruses like influenza. Furthermore, the study identified unique gene copy mechanisms in species like Myotis lucifugus that facilitate DNA repair, a process essential for preventing cancer and cellular damage.
These findings suggest that longevity and immunity may not be separate evolutionary traits but rather mutually reinforcing mechanisms. The ability to manage high viral loads through specialized immune responses appears to provide the biological framework necessary for these small mammals to live significantly longer than expected for their size.
