Bat Trang pottery village integrates technology to preserve tradition

The Bat Trang pottery village in Hanoi is integrating modern technology and digital transformation to preserve its traditional craftsmanship. The transition from traditional coal-fired kilns to gas, electric, and automated control systems has allowed for more precise temperature management, reducing defective products and limiting environmental pollution from smoke and dust.

Technology is being applied across various production stages, including clay processing, glaze filtration, drying, and mold manufacturing. Some workshops have even implemented artificial intelligence to monitor and operate kiln temperatures. Beyond production, digital tools such as design software, order management systems, and e-commerce platforms are being used to enhance business efficiency.

Despite these advancements, artisans emphasize that machines serve as support rather than replacements. While technology handles heavy tasks and precision control, the core value of the ceramics remains rooted in the manual modeling, hand-turning, engraving, and delicate painting performed by skilled artisans.
