Batam electricity supply restored after mass blackout

A major power outage in Batam, which began on October 12, 2026, has been fully restored. PLN Batam reported that the disruption, which affected hundreds of thousands of customers, was likely triggered by a wild animal entering the Sungai Harapan substation. While the electricity supply has returned to 100 percent, the blackout caused secondary issues, including disruptions to internet services and water distribution in areas like Nongsa.

In response to the incident, Danantara Indonesia has issued an apology and announced plans to strengthen PLN's reliability and service quality. The company is also undergoing a transformation to move directly under Danantara Indonesia. Additionally, President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an evaluation of PLN's business model to improve efficiency and reduce the need for government subsidies. To support long-term economic goals, there is also a push to accelerate the development of 100 GW of solar power capacity in Indonesia.
