Batam data centers to implement seawater desalination for cooling

Data center developers in Batam are planning to install seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) facilities to convert seawater into fresh water for their operational cooling systems. BP Batam Head Amsakar Achmad stated that the high demand for fresh water in data centers necessitates these installations.

DayOne, a Singaporean digital infrastructure company developing a large-scale data center campus in Batam, has committed to building an SWRO facility valued at approximately Rp180 billion. This installation will eventually be handed over to BP Batam for management. Similarly, PT Equator Gate System Batam (EGSB) is planning an SWRO facility to support its data center development in the Nongsa area.

Beyond meeting corporate needs, the SWRO plants have the potential to provide excess water capacity to local communities. BP Batam will support these developments through the necessary licensing processes.
