Batam land dispute clash leaves two dead
A violent clash between two groups occurred in the Setokok and Trans Barelang areas of Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday, September 14, 2026. The incident resulted in at least two deaths and approximately seven to ten injuries. Participants reportedly used stones, wood, and sharp objects during the confrontation.
Police Chief of Barelang, Kombes Anggoro Wicaksono, stated that the conflict is strictly related to a long-standing land dispute in the Rempang and Barelang regions. Authorities emphasized that the violence was not motivated by ethnic, religious, or racial issues (SARA).
Preliminary investigations suggest the use of air rifles rather than firearms during the incident. Police have detained six individuals, including a suspected primary perpetrator, as investigations and autopsies continue. Security forces, including the police and TNI, have been deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent further clashes.
