Batang Layar Bridge closed for two weeks for safety repairs

The old Batang Layar Bridge in Betong has been closed to traffic for at least two weeks, effective September 4, to undergo essential structural repairs. The closure follows a safety assessment by the Public Works Department (JKR) that identified structural concerns.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated that the two-week period is necessary to ensure the bridge is completely safe before reopening, even if repairs are finished sooner. He urged local residents and road users to remain patient during this period.

Simultaneously, construction of a new Batang Layar Bridge is underway, with physical progress exceeding 70 percent. The total project, which includes roadworks and related facilities, is more than 40 percent complete. Authorities have encouraged contractors to utilize dry weather to accelerate the replacement project to reduce long-term reliance on the old structure.
