Bath Iron Works lists historic Maine home for $1

General Dynamics Bath Iron Works has listed two residential buildings in Bath, Maine, for $1 each to facilitate industrial expansion. Among the properties is the Deering House, a circa-1900 structure located at 606 Washington St. that was once owned by prominent shipbuilder Gardiner G. Deering.

The $1 sale comes with the strict condition that the buyer must relocate the buildings to a legally permitted site by November 20, 2027. If no buyer steps forward with a viable relocation plan, the structures will be demolished to make room for new Bath Iron Works facilities.

The buyer assumes all financial and logistical responsibilities, including permits, licensed structural movers, transportation, site preparation, foundations, and utilities. Jolene Nickerson, director of facilities capital at Bath Iron Works, stated that the company is looking for ways to improve facilities to continue growth and employment in the region, while expressing hope that a preservationist can save the historic architecture.
