Bathla Group enters administration facing A$3.3 billion debt
Bathla Group, a major property developer based in New South Wales, has entered voluntary administration following significant financial distress. The company faces approximately A$3.3 billion (US$2.3 billion) in debt, a situation exacerbated by rising construction costs, elevated interest rates, and declining property prices.
Administrators from Teneo have assumed control of the firm with the immediate priority of stabilizing operations and maintaining construction activity to ensure the delivery of ongoing housing projects in Western Sydney. The company’s workforce has been stood down during this transition. While the developer is seeking fresh capital from existing and new lenders, the New South Wales government has declined to provide immediate financial support, with Premier Chris Minns stating that more information is required to assess the complexity of the situation.
The insolvency highlights growing vulnerabilities in Australia’s private credit market, which has become increasingly reliant on funding property developers. Major lenders involved include PAG, CVS Lane Capital Partners, and Centuria Bass.
