Batman sports center fire kills three, leading to arrests
An investigation is ongoing following a fatal fire at a sports center in Batman's Gültepe neighborhood, which occurred on August 30. The fire reportedly began in the sauna area due to an electrical panel malfunction.
Three people died from smoke inhalation: Şanzime Sarıgül, Emine Yani, and lawyer Gülsüm Öztekin Tunç. Twelve others were hospitalized during the incident. One of the victims, Emine Yani, was the niece of Turkey's Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, who attended the funeral services.
The Batman Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched a formal investigation. Following the incident, two business officials were arrested, while three employees were released, one under judicial control. The Batman Bar Association is closely monitoring the case to determine if negligence played a role in the fatalities.
