Battery Energy Storage Systems see safety and diagnostic advancements
New technological developments are addressing safety and maintenance challenges in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
To improve electrical safety during high-energy fault events, deterministic isolation is being introduced as a safety standard. This method provides a predictable and reproducible isolation outcome regardless of fault magnitude. Autoliv’s Pyro Safety Switch is one such technology, utilizing an actively triggered pyrotechnic disconnect to physically sever conductors in under 2 ms, ensuring permanent isolation up to 1500 V DC.
In parallel, ELECTRA AI and South Korean diagnostics company MinTech are collaborating to develop a predictive risk detection system. By combining MinTech’s electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) hardware with ELECTRA’s Battery Fleet Analytics software, the system aims to identify emerging battery health risks in real time. This approach seeks to provide operators with early warnings to reduce downtime and prevent localized faults from escalating into larger operational failures.
