Battery industry shifts toward 2027 solid-state production and V2G integration
Major battery manufacturers CATL and BYD have both targeted 2027 to begin pilot production of solid-state batteries. This technology aims to improve electric vehicle range, weight, and safety. BYD has recently secured several patents focused on maintaining reliable contact between solid materials during charge cycles and managing heat.
Separately, the European Commission is developing a proposal to mandate Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capabilities in new electric vehicles. This bidirectional charging technology would allow parked vehicles to return electricity to the grid during peak demand, helping to integrate renewable energy and reduce fossil fuel import costs. The initiative is part of a broader plan to increase electricity's share in final energy consumption to 46% by 2040.
