Battery industry updates: CATL secures copper supply and ProLogium starts mass production
CATL has entered a multi-year agreement to secure cathode copper through a Hong Kong subsidiary. The company plans to procure up to 20,000 tons of metal from Hong Kong Ansheng during 2027 and 2028, with a total transaction cap of 320 million US dollars. This move aims to secure essential raw materials for cell production. Additionally, CATL reported significant growth in its energy storage division, which saw an 87.5 percent revenue increase in the first half of 2026.
In the technological sector, ProLogium has commenced mass production of its generation 3.5 solid-state batteries in Taiwan. These large-format cells reportedly achieve an energy density of 381 Wh/kg. The company is designing its next generation to utilize approximately 90 percent of existing production infrastructure to ensure industrial scalability.
Regarding the European market, experts at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) suggest that Europe should focus on flexible manufacturing. While Asian manufacturers hold a cost advantage in standardized, high-volume cells, European companies may find success in specialized applications requiring diverse cell chemistries, varying form factors, and shorter development cycles for sectors like heavy machinery and stationary grid storage.
