Battery maintenance and testing methods

Maintaining and testing batteries can be achieved through various manual and technical methods. For automotive batteries, using an automatic charger compatible with the specific battery type—such as wet lead-acid, EFB, or AGM—is essential. Charging is particularly important in winter or during frequent short trips where the alternator may not provide sufficient charge. A 12-volt battery is considered full at 12.6 volts or higher, while a reading of 12.0 volts or less indicates it is largely discharged and requires immediate charging to prevent damage.

For smaller cylindrical batteries, such as AAA or C types, a simple drop test can indicate charge levels. By dropping a battery vertically from a height of approximately 15 centimeters onto a flat surface, the reaction reveals its state: a charged battery will typically tip over, whereas a depleted battery may bounce. This occurs because the zinc-based gel inside hardens as the battery discharges. While a battery tester provides the most accurate results, these manual methods offer quick alternatives.
