Battery safety: Experts warn against improper charging habits

Experts are providing guidance on the safe and efficient use of lithium-ion batteries found in smartphones, power banks, and e-bikes to prevent damage and fire hazards.

Fire protection expert Christian Prengel warns against common charging mistakes, such as charging devices overnight or on flammable surfaces. He notes that small, uncertified devices like toy drones or cheap power banks can pose significant risks if they lack proper CE marking or use incompatible chargers. Overheating is a primary warning sign of potential combustion.

To maximize battery lifespan, TÜV SÜD recommends avoiding complete discharges, known as deep discharges, which can degrade the battery. Instead, experts suggest maintaining a charge level between 30 and 70 percent. They also advise against leaving devices permanently connected to chargers and suggest removing chargers once the device is fully charged to prevent unnecessary wear.
