Battery storage projects in northern Spain face public scrutiny

The regional government of Cantabria has opened a 20‑day public information period for the Bess Astillero battery‑storage plant, a 45 MW, 90 MWh project costing about €34.5 million. The installation, promoted by Bellwood Corporate Services, will include 24 lithium‑ion battery containers and related power conversion equipment.

In neighboring Asturias, the parish of Veriña in Gijón is opposing a new battery park proposed by Ready to Build Renewables. Residents, led by local association president José Luis García Nicieza, argue that the site near La Peñoña could pose fire, lighting and noise risks. The project is subject to a 30‑day public consultation before the authorization proceeds.

Both initiatives illustrate growing debate in Spain over the placement of large‑scale energy‑storage facilities and the balance between grid flexibility and local community concerns.
