Battery storage research reveals price impacts and efficiency gaps

Researchers in Germany are introducing new tools and findings regarding the efficiency and economic impact of battery storage systems. Fraunhofer ISE has developed a free simulation tool via Energy-Charts.info to analyze how battery storage affects electricity prices. Using real market data from the EPEX SPOT day-ahead market, the tool simulates how different battery fleet sizes and storage durations influence supply and demand, potentially reducing price volatility.

In a separate study, researchers from HTW Berlin and aquu investigated the efficiency of residential battery systems. Their testing of 12 different battery and inverter systems from 10 manufacturers revealed significant discrepancies in standby power consumption. While the most efficient systems consumed only 4 watts per hour in standby mode, the least efficient consumed up to 64 watts. This 16-fold difference in idle consumption can result in an annual cost difference of approximately 200 euros for homeowners.
