Battery technologies evolve to power next-generation electric vehicles

Researchers and manufacturers are developing alternative battery technologies to reduce reliance on lithium and improve electric vehicle performance. While lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the market due to mature manufacturing ecosystems and falling costs, several emerging technologies are in development.

Sodium-ion batteries are moving toward wider commercialization by replacing lithium with abundant sodium. While they offer lower energy density than current lithium-ion cells, they are being scaled by companies such as CATL and BYD for use in smaller urban vehicles and commercial applications.

Solid-state batteries represent another significant area of research. By replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with solid materials, this technology aims to improve safety and increase energy density. However, significant engineering challenges remain regarding the cost and difficulty of mass-producing solid-state cells at scale.
