Battery technology advances in automotive and rail sectors

New advancements in battery technology are emerging in both the automotive and rail sectors to improve efficiency and sustainability.

In the automotive industry, solid-state 12V batteries have begun appearing on the US market. Unlike traditional liquid electrolyte batteries, these use solid materials such as sulfides, oxides, polymers, or halides. This design allows for a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, faster charging, and better performance in temperature fluctuations. Additionally, these batteries can be up to 50% lighter and reduce the risk of leaks.

In the rail sector, battery-powered trains are being developed to navigate non-electrified tracks without relying on diesel engines. At the InnoTrans 2026 trade fair in Berlin, a model designed for an Italian carrier was showcased. The vehicle can travel up to 100 kilometers on a single charge, with a full recharge time of approximately 30 minutes. These trains also incorporate energy-saving features like adaptive air conditioning and LED lighting, alongside a focus on using recyclable materials.
